Countdown

A week from today we'll be sitting on a cruise ship and leaving Florida.
Not yet the States since New York is on our way and we might leave the ship there for a moment. Not yet America because Halifax is another stop and we sure wanna do a little tour over there.
But apart from this were pretty close to say farewell.

A box is packed. Two suitcases almost full. And still a lot of things laying around and being used from day to day. So yes, it's messy. It's a weird mixture of being happy to go back to Europe for me and having those last moments over here.
Going to Ocala the last time today. Shitty town. But that was part of our life the last year. Last time drinking the bestest chia loaded kombucha. Last time sitting in "our" little park next to the rail road tracks.
All those last moments.
Not knowing when we'll see Sistos family again once we leave.
And together both coming to realize that we didn't make it over here.
Yes, it's a weird mixture of feeling happy and sad.
Just one more week.

Look what I ate!

I'm so excited. Two days ago I picked the first batch of MINI-mini carrots. The ones that were standing far too close. Yeah, I guess I should have done that like weeks ago, maybe even months, but I thought that spacing them was a waste of plants. Whatever. Now I got lots of tinys but I don't care!

Carrots. And carrot greens. And kale. And "Postelein".

Since it's less than three weeks until us on the boat my goal is to empty the pantry and the yard. No more store bought lettuce. And trying to cook off everything that's already there. My sister was of great help with that goal. We managed to rid a couple of jars. On top of eating that batch of eggplant. And on top of trying a lot of things that you gotta try when you come visit. Like tofurky sausages. Or ice cream.  Or that bunch of other delicious things that you can buy here but not there. You got the idea.

But as I said we still ate a lot from the pantry.

(On top you got some variation on tomato soup with the rest of home made sauerkraut and some vegan bologna topping. Underneath israeli couscous with carrot green - macadamia - kale pesto, tomatoes and postelein.

Inconsiderate critters

What have mosquitos, fleas and mice in common?
Right, they're keeping me awake.

It's a little past three in the morning and I have been sitting in the bed, hoping to not wake the person sleeping next to me while waiting for fleas to tickle and mosquitos to "ssssssssssssssssssss". So that I'd have the chance of catching them before they get to me.

And while I'm restlessly awake a very inconsiderate mouse is rumbling around the kitchen. What the heck? -
Three days ago we knew we had a rodent again after our two peaches both had bite marks. Thanks for nibbling each a bit. We put everything we thought they'd eat in the fridge.
Two days ago one of the unripe mangoes had a huge hole.
Yesterday they ate a whole banana which we had forgotten to cover. -
So tonight while not being able to get to anything they make a big fuzz, with things falling and such.

I just wish time was going a little faster and I was already a little further away,
from all those damn "botherlings"!

March.

Three busy weeks lay behind us. We've been around quite a bit: hiking and visiting St. Pete and the beach, going to Gainesville, cooking and baking. All with my little sister who made it across the ocean in a spontaneous trip visiting us in Florida while we're still here. Too much to write much more than we had a great time.

And we've reached our last weeks here in Florida and the U.S., soon we'll be on a boat that takes us back to Europe...

Circus - Please share:

There's two things I wanted to share with you here. One is a very nice set of artwork that will be published throughout the month of march. The images are designed to encourage people to "do the green thing". And I just peeked at the slideshow and was really amazed. HERE it is.

More importantly however is an accusation made at the moment towards some good friends of our friends. They are threatened by a huge lawsuit filed by Alanis Morrisette who claims they stole her dog.  What media says? But I'd like to oblige them by posting their statement over here because I feel it deserves to be heard:

REPOST: REPOST: REPOST: REPOST

Hi Friends & Family
You may or may not be aware that Patrick & I are being sued by Alanis Morissette & her husband Mario Treadway over our beloved dog Circus.
Media outlets have taken the story and misrepresented us as lowly thieves. Our statement given to TMZ was chopped up and distorted. We are now going to publish the full statement that we presented to TMZ.
Please help us to make it VIRAL! Please use your networks to help us spread the truth and encourage everyone you know to REPOST.
Please everyone help us spread the truth and make this story VIRAL! Our little family's wellbeing depends on it!

OUR FULL STATEMENT TO TMZ

I, Maria Garcia, was formerly employed as Alanis Morissette and Mario Treadway’s personal assistant and house manager. I was at no time employed as their housekeeper.

As an employee inside their home, I was privy to all that went on. After my employment was suddenly terminated, without explanation, in January of this year, I have honored my personal and professional commitment to respect the family’s privacy. The family has filed suit against me and has falsely accused me in the press of stealing their dog, Circus. I am now being forced to defend myself in court – and in the press. For that reason only, I am giving this statement. I am not receiving compensation for this statement nor would I ever “sell” information about a former employer for personal gain – even under these unfortunate circumstances.

Alanis and Mario’s accusation that I stole Circus from them is false is every sense of the word. Their accusation is not only false, it is malicious and extremely hurtful as I was a loyal and dedicated employee and worked in a close, personal capacity with the couple, their child, all of their pets, and multiple staff. I never imagined I would be in the position of defended myself against accusations Alanis knows are false.

After completing Alanis’ tour at the end of 2012, they returned home in January of 2013. By March 2013, Alanis and Mario asked me and my fiancé, Patrick Murch, to take Circus into our home because Alanis was allergic to Circus, he was relieving himself in their home, was very food aggressive (resulting in him being obese and having hip and other physical problems). Alanis was frustrated with Circus’ behavior and said he was disruptive to the family; posed a risk to their other dogs and their child; and was “too annoying” to continue in their home.

Alanis’ claim that she was on tour in 2013 and that I was asked to take Circus because of a “hectic touring schedule” is blatantly false. A simple Google search will confirm when Alanis was on tour. To my knowledge, Mario has never had a tour of his own. Alanis made this and others misrepresentations to an LAPD detective several weeks ago. The detective at first stated that the couple planned to press criminal charges against me. The detective spoke to my fiancé and my attorney and to me. The detective verified my version of the facts, and the matter was dropped.

During Alanis’ 2012 tour, I house sat for the couple, looked after their house, did several special projects and took care of their dogs. Circus lived at their home with their other dogs during the tour in 2012. When Alanis returned from the 2012 tour and Circus’ behavior was so “annoying and insufferable”, Alanis said that she “could take it any more” and to “get rid of him”.

Since March of 2013, Circus has lived exclusively with me, at my house. Over the course of the year, Circus became a part of our family. We worked hard to make him comfortable in our home and to help redirect his nervous behaviors. Circus is closely bonded with our other dogs, Jaoquin and Pony as well as with us. Based on our verbal agreement with Alanis, our long-standing family relationship (Patrick’s stepmother was employed by Alanis for 16 years), and the fact that Circus had lived solely with us for that year, it was obvious by their action that they too saw Circus as our dog. During the last year, Alanis did not visit Circus or ask after him.

Alanis saw Circus once, for 15 minutes, when I housesat for the family in September of 2013. The family went on a 3 week vacation to Bowen Island, Canada and I was house sitting. With Alanis’ permission I brought my dogs with me while I stayed at the house. When the family returned, Alanis saw Circus. She petted him and said hello. I gathered up my things and my dogs to return to my home. At that time, I asked Alanis if she wanted Circus back. She said no - and that it was better for everyone – including Circus that he remain with me. At this moment, it was clear that Alanis did not and would not ever want Circus back. I was happy as Circus was loved and happy at our home.

It came as a shock to us when, upon getting fired, we received a demand that we “return Circus” to his “proper owners”. I did not request Circus as a part of my severance. I believed, in good faith, that Circus was our dog. Alanis knew that Circus was well loved and cared for in our home and had grown inseparable from our other dogs. It was clear for a year that she had no interest in Circus.

In February 2014, when Alanis’ business manager demanded that we return Circus, we made several attempts to reach out to Alanis personally to ask for transference of the papers so that we may take legal ownership of Circus. Alanis has suddenly become extremely adamant about wanting him back, claiming that Circus is her “property”. During these exchanges, Alanis acknowledged that Circus is unlikely to reintegrate well as the issue of her allergies, Circus’ food aggression, loud barking, and urinating in the house continue. Alanis said that I must give Circus back, and that if he doesn’t integrate well, she will give him to someone else (not back to me).

We fear that Circus (a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix - incorrectly labeled in court paperwork as a Chihuahua/ Pug mix) may be taken from our loving home only to be dumped again if his “unfavorable” behaviors return.

Over the last month, we have been accused of being disrespectful in our correspondence with Alanis and Mario; endured private investigators and police coming to our home, Alanis’ assistants making false statements in our neighborhood to our neighbors accusing us of being “dog-nappers and animal abusers”. Now we are being hit with a lawsuit demanding $25,000, plus punitive damages.

Both Patrick and I served Alanis and Mario faithfully while in their employ – as did Patrick’s stepmother for 16 years. We, like Circus, have been unceremoniously discarded. Alanis’ sudden interest and demand for the “return of Circus” - a dog she told her employees to “get rid of” in March of 2013 – speaks to the truth.

We trust that the world at large will see this situation for what it really is. We are not wealthy and we cannot afford to defend this lawsuit – but we feel that we have to. We have to defend this lawsuit to clear our names and because Circus is our dog and as Alanis has said before, it is better for everyone – including Circus.

Please share and help those folks to keep their family member and not being ruined by a crazy and unnecessary law suit. Thanks!

Aubergine overkill

I'm knee deep in eggplants and eggplant recipes. Actually I prefer the french name aubergine much better, thus I'm going to use it, as they do in germany and the UK.
Where did they come from?
My in laws found them. Four huge boxes filled with huge aubergines were sitting next to the free food building, up for grabs. I'm glad they took only one box since it contains already maybe 30 big pieces of eggplant. Oh yes. And since they don't eat a lot of fresh / don't cook much and Sisto doesn't either it's pretty much up to me to keep up with them.
Alas, aubergine it is. - No time to write, they are waiting for me in the kitchen...

Big time yardening

For the last two days chances were high you'd find me in the backyard. The weather was really beautiful and inside it was still chilly, so really, what is the best thing to do? Yes, taking care of mother nature. - Well, she's able to take care of herself pretty well I guess, but providing her with a little space and profiting by extending "my garden" goes hand in hand.

First I removed our little water hole (a plastic box that Sisto and me had put in the ground last summer to rescue a couple of tadpoles we had found in a shrinking roadside puddle) - a pledge to remove it because of the mosquitos was out by my mother in law for a little while now.

Then I took care of the compost bin. The compost wasn't good, it was gooey and had a lot of larvae, but just a few worms. I don't know why. The last time I turned it it was the same. Only the first time did it smell good. But since it wasn't completely broken I put it back then. So I never really got my own compost into the ground.

This time I didn't wanted to put it back in the bin. So I used some of it as organic matter to fill that big hole in the ground. Worm cantina. When I went through the dirt I found two nicely sprouted avocado pits. I saved them, planting one next to the dead tree in the yard, so it cannot be mowed over.

Mowing is a big time problem here. Just a day after we talked about the wild blue flowers in our front lawn looking so nice because it hadn't been mowed for a while, the guy who does it came around and I was too late to ask him to spare the spot.
Only one small spot still held blossoming wilderness. The space around that former water hole. A couple stones plus the dug out dirt from the hole separate it a little, making it hard to mow.

I had already planted a couple of garlic cloves that had sprouted over there. Some of them were lucky, others got shorter. To protect them and some to be planted sweet potatoes I made a little brick outlining. Then I wrote what I had planted - garlic, sweet potato and  one of the earlier found avocado pits - onto palm leave stems and made it even more clear: this is a no mowing zone! Flowers saved. Bees welcome.

Today I further transplanted two kale plants and a couple of the small lettuces of which I still keep a lot in empty salad shells. A work in progress...

You're not tired yet? Here's more: Protecting my mallows after the mower had cut of the biggest of them with a little wall. Dug out the stones for that wall between some palm tree roots behind our room. Sowed amaranth and flax, some in the back some in the front. Finally, I guess, that was it...

No more GG puppies!

It's almost four. I've been working on our taxes and finishing them up a minute ago. So nice to know we'll get some money back, and even nicer to have the relieve of finished business!

Georgia had her spay surgery last wednesday. It was a horrible day because she had to wait in a little crate the whole day long for the surgery to take place. There was an emergency and instead of having us come in later we had her in around 9 in the morning. When we called to pick her up around four pm they told us they just started. Later, when she finally had woken up (with us waiting in front of the clinic because they also said we could pick her up at 5.30) she was shaking and almost fell over when she saw us coming to pick her up. In the car she was still so dizzy she had to fight to not fall over. Georgia was so happy when she was home: Immediately recognized her pillow, lay down and needed love and attention. She kept us awake for a couple of hours whining every time we would stop petting her. Then maybe an hour after I had tried out a homeopathic cure she finally fell asleep until the next morning.

Now she is already a lot better. Though pretty whiny. Three days ago she started to get into our closet which was really weird. I don't know if I already told you that she had gained some weight (some people feed her sausages and table scraps unfortunately) and her tits had grown in the last month, after we finally had them shrinking from when she was nursing. So when she was getting into the closet we thought about all this freshly and are pretty sure now that girl is false pregnant. And eventually the spay just triggered it. It's kind of cute and funny that she always wants to go into the closet though it's not a healthy state of mind I'm sure. Also I'm afraid of her getting sick when she's laying on the cold wood all the time so I put some towels and a blanket for her inside. I started giving her some homeopathy to help her off that believe and it looks like it might help. Hope she gets better soon!

Did you ever have a dog or cat that was false pregnant? How long did it last?

Witnessing both her and John after that surgery made us hope we wouldn't have to go through this again. We'll see. Right now she doesn't lick her wound which was our biggest fear and we're actually quite surprised by the fact that she doesn't. But maybe it hasn't yet started. But all this whining is challenging enough. John came back after surgery, was just a bit unbalanced (ok, he had already had a couple of hours to wake up, when we picked him up at four) but then just came home, lay down and slept the rest of the day. No whining. Neutering I guess is less invasive but it also shows the different personalities. At least now it's done. She cannot have more puppies, won't be in heat any more and will also have a much lower risk for several diseases when she gets older.

What's your experience with a freshly spayed or neutered animal?

Preparations

We get ready for the next part of our journey. We prepare for our trip to Portland, OR.

Yesterday I run a sewing marathon to get our curtains seamed. And also produced some sort of bedskirt so our storage room is a little bit hidden.

The day before we made our second attempt to built a stable bed. The first frame wasn't solid at all because the wood we had bought was too thin. Now it's there and we're so satisfied. The bed is so comfy once you lie down, you don't want to leave again.

Next week we're leaving Florida. First heading towards Texas. We'll make a stop in Houston for Sisto to play a concert there. Afterwards we're planning on going to Denver to see beautiful Colorado.
We want to cross some national parks on our way to the southwest and I'm really looking forward to riding our nice bus through all those awesome landscapes.

Avocado

A few weeks ago Sisto opened an avocado that was so ripe the pit inside had already split. A little sprout lurked in the middle so I couldn't resist. I planted it.

I had to be patient but now is the time.

My dill though never made it. Not a single plant did grow from the seeds I sowed in my first month here. Another project was more successful. When we had pineapple once, I remembered a project from a gardening book of my childhood. So I saved the top with the greens and I just put it on the ground outside and frequently watered it. You can as well do so in a pot. You can finally see that it must have developed some roots 'cause it got new leaves and the greens brightened up a lot.

Sourdough success

Yes.
Bread is done.

I adjusted the recipe a little bit: my starter had a weight of 660 g, so I increased the total amount of flour and water (proportional to mihl's recipe). And after one hour added a tiny bit of yeast to the dough (you can do that with a new sourdough) cause it hadn't risen at all.

I just tried my first piece of bread and it was so worth the effort. I'm so gonna start sourdoughing as soon as we're settled!

Little Challenges: Sourdough

6 days ago I started my first sour dough experience. Did you ever make sour dough? I didn't even think about it before I read >this<. But for the last half year every once in a while I came back to think about doing it.
The facts that made me try it right now were
 - my need to bake bread myself because I can't just go out and buy a nice loaf of "real bread"
 - the fact that they don't have fresh yeast which I really prefer for baking with yeast
 - the warm climate which should make it so easy peasy for the bacterias to grow.

So after nearly three months I got a big jar. And I got rye flour. In germany you get rye flour in every supermarket. I just saw it in some of the supermarkets in the organic section or at the health food store, so it was kind of expensive and whole grain, too. When I read a little bit more about sourdough yesterday I found out that whole grain flour is not the best one to start your culture with because there are some germs from the skin of the grain that make it harder for the desired bacterias to grow. So if you try it choose another type than whole grain for starting the sourdough if possible.

About my experience.. The first days were fine. The surface was bubbly. And it started to smell a bit sour. But after two days or so I really thought it might not work out. My dough wouldn't rise. There was some excessive fluid on the surface in the mornings. Yesterday was the last day of the process and I wanted to know if my dough was right or not. The internet did answer my question. It's ok if there's water on the surface. It's ok if it doesn't rise a lot. Your dough is ok as long as it doesn't start to mold, if it doesn't smell like you don't want to put your nose close to it again and if it doesn't start to be green or red or black. It is ok. I have a healthy and developing sourdough culture in my jar. And when I fed it for an additional time yesterday morning it would start to bubble nicely and had a gentle sour smell.

YEAH.
Today there's not a bit of water on the surface and I'm going to bake my first sourdough bread when I'm finished here. You wanna see a picture? Here you go:

Check out my bread >here<.

Topics

Being here raises a lot of questions in me. I even more stumble upon topics that already bothered me back in germany. But here I feel those issues are 1000 times worse.

Like: what food do I want to buy if most of the things that I can afford are either highly processed, full of pesticides, produced by major companies I really don't want to support, sold by large supermarkets I neither want to support ore genetically modified. And worst: most of the times all of this together.

Like: how can I live in this consumer society while knowing about the system of consuming, the system of exploitation, of waste and abuse that's hidden behind all those shiny products and in every plastic bottle that is sold in the supermarket.

I feel helpless and caged in the face of those facts.
And I stumble upon topics that I really want to share with you.
So I do:

There's a film about natural birth that will be screened quite soon where ever people are willing to screen it. http://www.oneworldbirth.net/

And there's things to consider when you go out to buy "organic" stuff http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_26121.cfm

There's more. Sure! There's so much more. Like the gmo-labeling debate going on right now in California. And the fact that there are still millions and millions of cows, pigs, turkeys and chickens that are tortured every day because people feel the need to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner meat, drink milk that was meant to feed baby animals and fill their cholesterol level up with eggs.
Yes, there's soo much more. There's so much I'm getting sick right now.

It starts to become a hippie!

Nothing more to tell at the moment..

A trip to the beach

Today we went on a trip to Crystal River. We still need to change at least one tire of the van and had heard of a cheap tire shop over there.

Unfortunately they didn't have a used one of our size and new tires cost about 120 $. But the two guys from the garage totally freaked out about our car. Funny.
And after all that trouble we had with it it's good to have someone who's a bit into cars freaking out about it. It reminds us that even if we had to put some money, work and tlc into the car we would get enough if we'd put it up for sale again. Yep. "If you'd put it here on the street for sale, you could get about 23" (hundred), that's what he said.

We tried to find tires at some places. We thought tires would be the easiest part. It is not.
Right now those drivers with a pick up truck can't find their size anymore and put the size of our car onto their autos. This means: our size is rare and gone immediately at the tire places. No good news.

Good news was: the beach was empty when we came there. The sky was clouded and it had rained a little. There even were some smaller waves. It was nice!
We went the little mosquito path. I had sprayed myself furthermore there weren't too many. Instead butterflies and some nice flowers. And little lizards that were hunting butterflies (one had a catch in it's mouth).

I went into the water. Real swimming. Suddenly no ground under my feet. I don't know how long I havn't been swimming. Too long. Swimming was awesome. When we drove back home I really had the feeling that we had been at the beach.

When walking in low water we suddenly saw a strange fish. First thought: a ray. No, something's wrong. This looks a bit different. Like something between fish and crab. With a shell. And flippers that were used almost like feet. It had the size of a breakfast plate.
Some ancient fish species. I just looked it up and obviously this thing is a horseshoe crab.

We shortly stopped at the mall in Crystal River since I havn't been to a mall yet and I was curious about it. Ok, it wasn't what I had expected. It was like Mülheim inner city on sunday. Dull. Most of the shops were empty. Some closed. The air smelled like popcorn and speakers transported what a girl sitting on a chair in the middle of the hall played on her guitar while singing. Something was wrong about the ratio of people and space in the large center hall.

And when we came home from our long long day Sisto got 6 letters from that stupid insurance company that didn't want to take us. Six times the same letters telling him in the same words that he doesn't fulfill their requirements. It's like a bad joke reminding me of Harry Potter getting his Hogwarts letters. Wicked, not.

We end our day by doing hippie stuff. But that's another story.

Mittwoch, 15. August 2012

That's it.

We registered our car. Finally!

Dienstag, 14. August 2012

A clear view

The windows of our car were tinted when we got it. All windows except the windshield were covered with purple lamination. And the lamination was covered with a thin film of dirt. It was not possible to clean this off properly. So we first decided to remove the foil from the front windows. And after all from the back, too.

It looks so much brighter and nicer inside the car. I'm happy I went through the mess of removing  the lamination and especially that sticky glue underneath. It took some hours but today I could finish the last two windows.
✓

Obviously the roof is fixed, too. Right now we're pretty happy. Just need to find insurance now and get it on the streets, hm?

Encounter

There was a firefly in our room yesterday night.
